KatzEye™ Focusing Screen for theNikon® D3100, D3200 & D5100
The KatzEye™ focusing screen for the Nikon D3100, D3200 and D5100 is a laser matte with a split prism circle and a microprism collar, very similar to the one you would find in many classic SLRs. It is a direct replacement for the original, with no modifications required to the camera at all. The split prism with microprism ring is a great combination for focusing in a variety of situations. The screen will have NO effect on the functioning of the 11 point autofocus system and all viewfinder indicators will continue to function as intended.
Nikon D3100/D3200/D5100 Viewfinder with Split Prism & Microprism Ring (Simulated)
The KatzEye™ focusing screen for the Nikon D3100/D3200/D5100 has NO effect on existing viewfinder information. All viewfinder markings, including focusing points will still function normally.
Whenever a split prism focusing screen is used in an SLR, some impact on the camera’s light metering is to be expected. This effect was minimal for the KatzEye™ Nikon D3100/D3200/D5100 focusing screen in our testing. However, it is always advisable to take a test shot and set an appropriate exposure compensation whenever doing critical work. Approximate exposure compensation values for various lenses are as follows*:
(S) = Standard Screen (without OptiBrite treatment) (O) = Enhanced Screen (with OptiBrite treatment) 0 = No exposure compensation required.
*Note: These exposure compensation suggestions are a recommended starting point only and actual results may vary depending on conditions. Users are advised to take a test photo and check the histogram before beginning any critical work. Apertures indicated in the above chart are the lens maximum aperture as indicated on the lens body and are not affected by the actual aperture chosen for a given photo.
Metering test results presented are based on testing of the D3100 model. While results are expected to be similar for the D3200 and D5100, users of these camera models are strongly encouraged to take a test shot and check the histogram before beginning any critical shooting.
The KatzEye™ focusing screen for the Nikon D3100/D3200/D5100 is available exclusively in the KatzEye™ “Plus” version . The “Plus” version has a unique prism design which delays the prism ‘blackout’ phenomenon until well after f11. Ordinary split prisms will black out by about f5.6, rendering them difficult to use with slower zoom lenses, teleconverters, or in extreme macro photography... but not the KatzEye™ “Plus”. More information about the KatzEye™ “Plus” can be found here.
The KatzEye™ screen is a direct replacement for the original and no modifications to the camera are required. The installation requires no special tools or skills, but it does require working in tight spaces. If you are not confident in your vision or dexterity, professional installation might be advisable. For those users installing the screen themselves or for those taking the camera to a local shop, complete installation instructions, with plenty of photos, are available for download here. We will also include an installation tool to assist in the manipulation of the screen retaining wire, but the installer should still expect to provide their own tweezers, gloves, lens tissue, and other common items.
If you do not wish to perform the installation yourself and you do not have a trusted local shop, we’d be happy to install your new focusing screen for you here at KatzEye™ Optics. Please see the Installation Service page to order installation with your focusing screen. Installation service at KatzEye™ Optics costs $65, plus the cost of return shipping of your camera.
Like all screens made by KatzEye™ Optics, the Nikon D3100/D3200/D5100 screen can be OptiBrite™ brightness enhanced for the ultimate appearance. The OptiBrite™ treatment has little to no additional affect on light metering in the D3100/D3200/D5100 beyond the effect caused by the prisms (described under Metering Information). Click here for more information about the OptiBrite™ treatment.
All KatzEye™ focusing screens are available with optional guide patterns to aid in proper composition. We have a variety of standard patterns of grid lines and crop guides available or we can provide a custom pattern to your design. Click here for more information about our composition aid patterns.
All KatzEye™ focusing screens are custom made to order and are usually not available to ship the day the order is placed.
As of January 5, 2015, we are changing our production over to a periodic batch method. What this means is that we will produce screens only when a sufficient number have been ordered to make a batch of optimum size. Until then your order will be held in queue, to be processed in sequence, when we reach the target batch size. This could be a matter of days or weeks, depending on the rate at which orders are received. If we do not reach the optimum production batch size, or if at any time you choose to cancel your order, we will of course refund your deposit in full.
